The Pegaraw in Faux Cubism

This monument designed and executed by National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva drew its inspiration from the call to arms by then President Fidel Valdez Ramos to the Filipino people to meet the new millennium with courage and optimism, fortified by a vision termed by FVR as Philippines 2000.

The Pegasus in Greek mythology is a winged horse known to carry the lightning bolts for the Olympic God Zeus and which upon striking his hoof on the ground causes springs to burst forth.

The tamaraw is unique and indigenous to the Philippines, and is a relative of the carabao the historical mascot which adorned the UPLB campus gates.

The winged tamaraw is therefore the composite imagery of a resurgent Filipino people and an inspired university to soar to greater heights of creative, scientific and technical productivity to make the country competitive with the rest of the world.

The Class of 1960 of the UPLB College of Agriculture offers this monument to the generations of Los Banos students yet to come – to aspire, to soar, to fly.

One of the websites that I keep on checking back. It’s full of awesomeness. Basically, his art has three genres (if I may call it like that) as far as I know:

Artworks. The first one would be the creatures he creates. These are vector-like images that has simple line strokes, non-gradient shapes that has accents of a darker color of the main color and a whiteshinehighlight. The creatures are not creaturesper se. There is interactions between these creatures, perhaps with nature or humans. Whimsical most of the time and brings you to a world you’ve never seen before. The great thing is, you can getwallpaper versions of his art! #freebies
Icons. My goodness. Pixel-perfect icons for applications. I would assume these are for mac apps and all. It ranges to other sub-genres: from professional-looking 3D icons, rice ball emoticons to steam-punk almost-real graphics. #jelo
Sketches. This are paper and pencil type of artworks. Rugged lines with no shadings. I would assume this is theraw versions of his final icons and artworks. Again, #jelo

What I like best in his website, is the loading dog he got in his Sketches section.

I want to pursue a design degree.

When I was in high school, I applied for UPD under the Fine Arts program as my first choice. My second choice was Journalism. Wavelengths of these courses might not reach each other I assume but it was I who chose these courses, not my parents. It’s kinda weird, right? But I guess, back then, I have a budding passion in the said order. I wasn’t able to get the fine arts spot. I did not know how to take the talent test; did not even know when it was scheduled. UPLB is my second campus choice. I applied for Communications Arts but I am currently trying to finish my CS degree. There are so much complexities as to why I haven’t graduated yet. I am trying to settle and compose that in my head and probably type them down after graduation.

It was in the later years of my college that I realized I have diminished interest in CS. As if it’s a candy I am fed up chewing. It’s like some people’s relationship, complicated. Anyhoo. Don’t get me wrong by picturing a kid having tantrums throwing away stuff after they’re fed up using it. I have an enormous respect for my course. I do! I can see its potentials and can see its applications in future technology and innovations although I really can’t see myself doing those things for good. Truth be told, this course fascinates me. This course requires a really tough understanding of Maths. My brain refuses to process Maths causing me to flunk a lot of math-related subjects. OK that’s enough. Full details of my defense will be on a separate future blog. #buzzkill

I’d like to convince myself that I have misarranged Maslov’s hierarchy of needs. I see myself focusing rather on things in the self-actualization and trying to shun things that are expected of me to actually do. But the hurtful catch is that I need to do some of these things that I don’t feel like doing. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes. Kinda immature if you’re gonna look at it. But believe me.

These circumstances made me realize what I really wanted to do. There is a different kind of high when I look at art, a very intricate calligraphy, witty graphics design, color combinations and all. My amusement never ceases on these kind of things. Hopefully, I could make someone feel the amusement that I have when they look at my art. Hopefully. Hopefully one day.

So regarding the image above. That is one really beautiful art by Dana Tanamachi. Her chalk art is something that continuously inspires me. Every time I look at it, I feel like picking up a pen and creating stuff she does. Her other works are really stunning and intricate yet simple (a chalk! a white chalk and a blackboard). Her prowess in calligraphy, balance amongst elements, flow of letters and curves, theme, is spot-on.

Dribbble is full of art/design awesomeness. Recently stumbled to one of the links there and it took me to Si Scott’s awesome portfolio. I was blown away for like 20 minutes. I gazed into his art with artistic envy. It’s like I wanna throw away everything in my desk and stark inking stuff and calligraphy sketches. I couldn’t admire his art more! Terribly terribly beautiful.
